Jack Michael’s behavioral analysis of the role of motivation

PRESENTED BY:
MARGARET M. HAGERTY, M.Ed., BCBA, NYS LBA

AUDIENCE: This workshop is designed for teachers, therapists, behavior analysts and others whose role is to design and implement methods to increase the verbal behavior of children with autism and related disorders in home, school or center-based programs.

PREREQUISITES: Participants should have knowledge of B.F. Skinner’s Analysis of Verbal Behavior and make use of the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (Sundberg, 2007) as an assessment and curriculum guide.

DESCRIPTION: Children with autism often have no or limited echoic verbal behavior or make few varied speech sounds. This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the available research for considering alternative methods of speaking, selecting an alternative method based upon the learner’s profile as well as description of teaching procedures to increase the frequency and variety of speech sounds. In addition, the workshop will review vocal shaping procedures to improve speech intelligibility. The workshop will provide video illustrations as well as opportunities for discussion and questions and answers. Following the workshop, participants will be allowed an option to sign up for a 30 minute 1:1 with a BCBAs to go over questions or concerns related to the training.
